Art nouveau engraved dragonfly brooch
This special brooch is a classical motif inspired from the art nouveau period. I continue to use the dragonfly in my work as it is a fascinating insect in its own right and makes a wonderful and lively form. The piece is made primarily from 20 gauge sterling silver. I hand engraved the wings using sharpened steel points to carve the metal. Then I made the body from 14 k gold fill sheet. This is solid 14 k gold clad onto base metal. Much thicker and more robust than plating. I also used 14 k gold fill wire for the background circle. I used the ancient techniques of chasing and repousse to shape and add detail to the body. The pin is about 50 mm wide and 42 mm tall.
At the top is a 5 mm lab created ruby cabochon. The pin stem is sturdy nickel and is 42 mm long. I also included a sterling silver hidden bail on this piece. This would allow you to wear it as a necklace on a chain you provide.
