Art Nouveau Seahorse Silver Engraved Necklace
I was inspired by a classical antique necklace by Lalique in which he paired 3 seahorses with a multitude of moonstones representing air bubbles. I really loved the flowing animorphic image that evoked, but wanted to focus on the simple and sinuous form of a single seahorse as a center piece rather than a large grouping (which seemed a touch gaudy to me).
I used sharpened steel points (gravers) to hand carve the metal, in this case 20 gauge sterling silver, and then set a sequence of 5 moonstones, graduated from 4 mm to 6 mm in diameter. The seahorse is 23 mm wide and 58 mm long, making it a substantial, but elegant centerpiece for a statement necklace. I placed the bail hidden on the reverse so as to not interrupt the flow of the design and I paired it with an 18 inch diamond cut figaro sterling silver chain.
